The CAA has issued a summary of responses to its consultation on Mode S carried out earlier in 2008. In the light of these, the document also sets out how the Director Airspace Policy proposes to take mode S policy forward.

Lois Parker trophy - Awarded for services to the LAA: mainly behind the scenes.

Al Mathie
Al has been an active member of the PFA/LAA for many years looking after his own Taylor Monoplane (G-DBNC) and Andreason biplane (G-AYFV).

His biggest frustration for many years was that his Auster (G-AIGF) was not eligible for an LAA permit. For nearly 40 years Al has had an involvement with Auster's, beavering away quietly behind the scenes most of the time by helping out fellow Auster owners.

In the last 12 months especially, Al has been the unsung hero of the Auster transfer from C of A to Permit.

With all his knowledge of Auster's and the LAA permit system he has produced Auster Airworthiness Compliance Reports taking the huge workload off the LAA engineers, which helped enormously to speed up the transfer. He has traveled all over the country to speak with people and to check for himself any differences in types of Auster's and produced meticulous records of his findings.

Al had compiled records of when each of over 100 Auster's would need to be transferred as their C of A's lapsed enabling the LAA Engineering staff to programme them into their busy schedules.

Al continues to work behind the scenes answering queries from Auster Group members and further taking the workload off the LAA Engineering staff.

Without Al's work, the job of transferring the Auster's would have either taken much longer or required more staff at LAA HQ.

This year is very special to Al as he has now not only seen his beloved Auster marque being transferred to the permit but his own Auster transferred a few weeks ago.
